Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen Peroxide is a harsh chemical that is used as a bleaching agent in toothpaste. In toothpaste it's in the form of carbamide peroxide that is used in whitening gels and strips in concentrations of up to 6 percent. It can be toxic when eaten or swallowed. The National Poisons Information Service in the United Kingdom says that swallowing of hydrogen peroxide in concentrations similiar to those during professional whitening "may cause irritation of the gastrointestinal tract with nausea, vomiting... Painful gastric distension and bleaching may be caused by the liberation of large volumes of oxygen in the stomach". Stomach troubles were also recorded in a study when animals swallowed a commercially available 6 percent hydrogen peroxide whitener. So when you are using hydrogen peroxide, wheter it be in your toothpaste or as a gargle, delute it, and be sure to NOT SWALLOW any.
